Course Description: Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) was designed to create secure attachment bonds between parents/guardians and adolescents—specifically, teens struggling with depression and suicidality. This empirically supported modality improves the family’s capacity for interpersonal problem-solving, affect regulation, and negotiation of attachment and identity development, while promoting autonomy. Strengthening family cohesion creates a buffer against depression, suicidal thoughts, and risky behaviors. This presentation provides an understanding of the theoretical foundation and five-task framework of ABFT. Through case studies, we will look at how this emotionally focused approach facilitates rapid change within the family by shifting from behavior to empathy and understanding of one another’s experience. Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to: 1.Explain the theoretical foundation of Attachment-Based Family Therapy.
2. Discuss the purpose of the five ABFT treatment tasks
3. Describe the strategies used in the five treatment tasks.
