This 3.5 hour workshop is designed as a supplement/extension to the full day “Helping Students At Risk for Suicide” training developed in 2018-19 by the workshop leaders. It is intended for school-based and community mental health practitioners, such as school psychologists, social workers, school counselors, clinical psychologists and mental health counselors who have some familiarity with suicide prevention and intervention tools. The workshop will feature updated statistics and recent trends, and will examine suicide prevention and intervention through a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) lens. Specifically, the workshop will focus on universal, targeted and individual interventions, and will touch on such topics as gatekeeper training, creating an inclusive school climate, suicide policy and practice documents, considerations for at-risk groups, individual interventions, and safety planning. The workshop leaders will provide extensive tools and hands-on resources available to NY state practitioners.

Learning Objectives
1. Workshop participants will demonstrate an understanding of statistics and recent trends as it relates to suicide risk for children, adolescents and young adults.

2. Workshop participants will demonstrate an understanding of how effective school climate, inclusiveness and a positive school culture may act an effective deterrent to youth suicide risk.

3. Workshop participants will demonstrate an understanding of possible individual and group factors which may contribute to suicide risk.

4. Workshop participants will demonstrate an understanding of effective assessment tools which may be used to assess potential risk.
