This workshop will examine a Strengths-Based approach using the value-driven philosophy of Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare (SBNH) to guide therapists in working with strengths to promote health and facilitate healing. The workshop will explore the importance of focusing on strengths, what is meant by strengths, the different approaches that are used to identifying strengths, and how to develop strengths.

Learning Objectives
This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Compare and contrast a Strengths-Based approach with the deficit/disease model.
2. Name SBNH’s tenets, foundations, and values.
3. Differentiate between methods of assessing for strengths.
4. Determine how SBNH’s nine characteristics of strengths can be used to discover strengths.
5. Specify different approaches to developing strengths.

Brief Bio:
Laurie Gottlieb is a Professor at the Ingram School of Nursing at McGill University, Montreal, Canada where she holds the Flora Madeline Shaw Chair of Nursing. She is the Nurse-Scholar-in-Residence at the CIUSSS-Centre Ouest (Jewish General Hospital) in Montreal, the Visiting Professor of Leadership at the Canadian Nurses Association. She was the former Associate Dean of Medicine and Director of the Ingram School of Nursing. She was the Editor-in-Chief of CJNR (Canadian Journal of Nursing Research), a position she held for 22 years. She earned her RN from the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, her Baccalaureate and master’s degrees in nursing and a doctorate in developmental psychology from McGill University. She is the developer of Strengths-Based Nursing and Healthcare (SBNH). She is currently the principal investigator of a multi-site, multi-disciplinary Canadian Federally Funded Partnership Grant: Transforming Nurses’ Work Environments Through a Strengths-Based Leadership and Management Training Program.

Professor Gottlieb has authored many books, chapters, monographs, and peer reviewed articles. Her book Strengths-Based Nursing Care: Health and Healing for Person and Family received the 2013 American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year , first place in the Continuing Education category. Her books have been translated into French, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Dutch. She has been recognized for her contributions to nursing and healthcare and was awarded a Canadian Nurses Association Centennial Award, a one-time award given to the 100 most influential Canadian nurses; L'Insigne Du Merit- by the Quebec Ordre of Nurses; the Prix du Conseil interprofessionnel du Québec (CIQ). She received an honorary doctorate from the Universite Laval. She was inducted as a fellow into the Canadian Academy of Health Science and is a charter fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing.
